We added a Geolocation section to ASN pages. It shows where a network’s IP space actually sits in the world, not just where it is registered.
What is new
IP density map. A hex-grid heatmap shows where an ASN’s IPs geolocate. The grid resolution adjusts to zoom level, since network footprints vary widely.
- Comcast spans roughly 5.1 million geolocated points across the continental US.
- Colt, a pan-European B2B network, spans around 61,000 points concentrated in a handful of metros. One fixed hex size cannot represent both well, so the map scales with the view.
Country breakdown. A ranked list shows the countries an ASN operates in, weighted by IPv4 address share. Some networks are simple:
- Telecom Italia is effectively 100% Italy.
Others are not:
- Colt splits fairly evenly between the UK (25.7%) and Germany (20.2%).
- AWS shows one dominant home country with a long tail across 195 countries.
Registered-country alert. A callout appears when an ASN has zero measured IPs in its own registered (whois) country. This flags cases where whois records do not reflect where a network actually operates.
- AS272096 (PacketHub) is a clear example: registered in Panama, but operating in 31 countries with no measured presence in Panama itself.
The data behind it
The feature draws on two datasets, refreshed daily, covering 85,562 ASNs (78,031 with IPv4 presence, 7,531 IPv6-only; as of Jul 9, 2026). IPv4 and IPv6 are tracked separately throughout. IPv6 address space is large enough that blending the two would distort the picture, so every metric, map, and share calculation keeps them apart.
The map uses H3 hexagons, the same spatial indexing approach already used on our range pages (/8, /16, /24) and ASN polygon views. Each hex is colored by geolocated block density on a log scale, which keeps sparse global networks and dense national ISPs both legible on the same map style.
Why it matters
WHOIS/Geofeed data alone can be misleading. A network’s registration location does not always match its operational footprint, and that gap matters for fraud detection, compliance, and general network research.
This feature makes that gap visible directly on the ASN page, backed by our active measurement data rather than self-reported records.
