Consider providing a pay-as-you-go tier

I’d like to make use of IPinfo’s location and privacy information for abuse detection on a website that I run, but at the present costs, the cost of using IPinfo itself would be at least 4x the other costs of the website.

Please consider providing a pay-as-you-go option that allows folks to be billed per request, perhaps rounded to the nearest dollar in order to prevent miniscule transaction fees, for example.

Thank you for considering this request.

Hey,

Thank you for the suggestion. I will keep this in mind. There is currently no pay as you go pricing model, as far as I know. But if in the future we do introduce a pay-as-you-go pricing tier, I will update everyone in the community.

The reason we do not have a pay-as-you-go pricing, as far as I know, is to offer reduced pricing by bundling our products together based on common requirements for requests limits. However, for open-source projects, individual developers, and small teams use cases, we offer free API and free IP database services.

On a tangent…

I have discussed an idea of DIY privacy detection service using our free IP to ASN or IP to Country ASN database before. Considering the free IP database comes with ASN information, you could actually build a decent privacy detection database.

The DIY privacy detection project would involve identifying common VPN hosting ASNs used. I often pitch this idea to open-source projects to build this DIY privacy detection database or even an API for open-source developers. We can provide the data you need, but the community needs to come together to build this DIY open-source privacy detection database.

Thank you for the suggestions; in this case it wouldn’t have worked though because the abusers were using PIA VPN which is mostly hosted in Cogent, AS174 and classifying them as a “datacenter” is a great way to block a large part of the US from accessing your website.

That is super interesting. Daniel Card I believe tweeted about these people:

So we can see PIA VPN! now let’s let the enrichment complete!
