Free account gets inaccurate city reports for IPs

Hello,

I have started using the IPInfo API, to get some map of connexion IPs. However, it seems that the city reported by the API calls are quite inaccurate.

It this by design, as I am on the free API, or is there something I am missing.

Hmm, we located all of them in France and across:

  • Lyon: 7
  • Saint-Étienne: 2
  • Moulins: 2
  • Paris: 1
  • Nice: 1
  • VĂ©nissieux: 1
  • Charbonnières-les-Bains: 1
  • OrlĂ©ans: 1

The type of carrier IPs:

  • Bouygues: 7
  • SFR: 3
  • No carrier: 7

How did you realize the reported information is incorrect?

If you put these IPs in maxmind’s geoip demo all IPs are around the correct city (mostly Lyon) and orleans.

I would expect most of them to be in the same Lyon area.

Why do you think MaxMind places them in the correct city? Were those IP addresses assigned to your device while you were in Lyon? What is the source of these IPs?

I can place them there because I know where coworkers are located when connecting to our servers. Most are from the office (IPs removed from the list), over their phone (from the office over the internet), or over their home IP. Few are out of town workers.

There is a specific IP which is the home IP of a coworker that showed up in “le palais” east of france when it actually is in Lyon area.

That is really interesting. I have flagged this issue to the engineering team. We are investigating this issue.

Thank you very much for checking in with me. I should have updated you already. This is great feedback, and we are working on it. There was an oversight in our data processing pipelines, so we are trying to amend this and push this fix as soon as possible.

I have also talked with one of the telecoms in France to get some confirmation from them.

This is being actively worked on, and the data will get updated automatically.
