Question About How IP Type is Determined

I was wondering if you could share some general insight into how the IP types (such as “Data Center,” “Fixed Line ISP,” etc.) are determined on your platform.

I’ve come across several subnets in Thailand that are currently labeled as “Data Center/Web Hosting/Transit,” but based on local knowledge, they appear to be used mainly for fixed-line ISP services.

I understand that the full methodology might be proprietary, but even a high-level overview of the data sources or criteria used for classification would be very helpful.

For example, IP address 87.124.1.1 is categorized as “Hosting,” but after reaching out to the user, it seems the subnet is used to serve general fixed-line customers, not for hosting or data center services.

Thank you in advance, and I really appreciate the great work your team is doing!

Hi @ponkmutt,

I really appreciate your post in the community. My apologies for the late response though.

This community post is a good starting point: Hosting vs ISP? How we decide the IP connection types

To summarize, we look at a number of different factors to determine what type of IP address it is. It is mostly based on network behaviors, number of hosted domains, etc. Fundamentally, it is based on active measurement.

Even though we categorize ASNs as either hosting or ISP, the reality is that the results are more of a confidence score. From each individual IP range, we build up the score to finally determine the ASN.

The IP address is not currently specified as a hosting type, nor is the ASN specified as a hosting type.

We can also review the /24 prefix of the IP address here: 87.124.1.0/24 IP Range - IPinfo.io

  • No hosted domains
  • Only two pingable IP addresses
  • Some router IP addresses

Nothing points to that IP address being an Hosting IP address at this point of time. This information can surely change though.

Let me know what you think.

If you are based in Thailand, please feel free to recommend a server to us. We currently have servers in Bangkok and Vientiane, but we are also open to purchasing more servers in new cities there.

Cheers!
