Network Overview

Starlink operates two ASNs under the SpaceX umbrella. AS14593 (Space Exploration Technologies Corporation) is the primary Starlink satellite broadband ASN and accounts for 98.7% of all IPv4 address space. AS40714 (SpaceX Services, Inc.) holds a smaller corporate block used for internal and ground infrastructure.


ASN Details


Country Distribution

The US accounts for ~55% of all geo-mapped Starlink IPv4 space. Regional patterns reflect Starlink’s expansion timeline: English-speaking markets (AU, CA, NZ, GB) first, then Latin America (BR, CO, MX, CL, AR), then Africa (KE, NG, ZA) and Asia (IN, JP, PH, BD).

Bulgaria’s outsized presence (#9) is notable and likely reflects a regional PoP or ground station routing IPs for multiple nearby European countries.


Top US Hubs

Chicago dominates with 43% of all US-attributed Starlink IPs — almost certainly a major ground station or PoP where satellite traffic is aggregated before IP assignment. Hawthorne, CA is SpaceX’s corporate headquarters. Ashburn, VA is a major internet exchange hub, suggesting peering infrastructure.


Global Legal Entities

Starlink has established country-specific legal entities across Latin America (Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Panama, Costa Rica) and India. Entities appear under both starlink.com and spacex.com domains depending on when they were registered with their regional RIR.


Privacy / VPN Signals

The ~21,000 ranges flagged as VPN are expected behavior: Starlink uses CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT) to route all terminal traffic through centralized ground stations. From the outside, these IPs appear as shared/aggregated addresses — a pattern our privacy detection associates with VPN-like behavior.

No hosting, Tor, or relay flags are present, confirming Starlink operates strictly as a consumer/business ISP.


Recent Country Expansion

53 new countries were added in the last 12 months, concentrated in African island/coastal nations, Baltic/Eastern Europe, and small Pacific/Caribbean territories.

Ukraine’s rapid growth (+192%) reflects wartime demand — Starlink became critical infrastructure after traditional networks were disrupted. Sudan (+600%) and Zimbabwe (+233%) reflect accelerating African expansion. The US itself is still doubling year-over-year despite being the most mature market.


Satellite ISP Comparison

  • Country reach: Starlink’s 211 countries is 3× the next competitor (Intelsat at 70), reflecting LEO constellation’s inherent global coverage.
  • IPv6: Starlink has 843 IPv6 ranges vs Viasat’s 7 — a 120× advantage reflecting Starlink’s modern, dual-stack-native architecture.
  • Viasat leads in raw IPv4 (~1.19M) but concentrates in 61 countries with almost no IPv6, suggesting older infrastructure.
  • Hughes is US-centric — ~720K IPs but almost entirely in the US, reflecting its HughesNet consumer broadband focus.
  • OneWeb (Eutelsat) LEO rival has only 6,656 IPv4 IPs and 8 countries — far behind Starlink in direct-to-consumer deployment.
  • Amazon Kuiper has no detectable IP presence yet — still in test/launch phase as of mid-2026.

The ASN picture is slightly tricky, so let me split it by source.

A geofeed is self-published by the operator. It is authoritative for the geolocation of the prefixes Starlink lists. It is not authoritative for ownership. With that in mind:

From the Starlink geofeed:

  • AS14593 (primary Starlink network)
  • AS27277 (SpaceX corporate)
  • AS45700 (PT Starlink Services Indonesia, their local subsidiary)
  • AS4787 and AS149662

AS4787 and AS149662 are the tricky pair. A geofeed maps prefixes, not ASN ownership. Both are registered in WHOIS to local Indonesian operators, Cyberindo Aditama and Hostnet Data Global. Starlink is required to work with local network access providers in Indonesia, so they likely appear through that arrangement rather than as ASNs Starlink owns outright.

Not in the geofeed, but operated by SpaceX: AS40714 (Starshield, the government and defense side). That one comes from the registry, not the geofeed.
